Greek Mythology Names

120 names

Greek mythology has given the world some of its most enduring names. The gods, heroes and nymphs of ancient Greece appear in epic poems, tragedies and later art, and their names still carry a sense of wisdom, beauty and adventure.

Several of the names here come from the great epics. Penelope is the faithful wife of Odysseus in the Odyssey, and Hector is the noble Trojan prince of the Iliad. Elena is a form of Helen, whose beauty was said to spark the Trojan War. Jason led the Argonauts in search of the Golden Fleece.

Goddesses and nature spirits add grace to the list. Athena was the goddess of wisdom, Iris the messenger goddess of the rainbow, and Selena echoes Selene, the goddess of the moon. Phoebe was a Titan associated with brightness, Cora connects to Kore, another name for Persephone, and Chloe and Khloe come from an epithet of Demeter linked to green shoots. Ariana and Arianna are often tied to Ariadne of the labyrinth story, and Melissa means bee in Greek. Phoenix is the legendary bird reborn from its own ashes. These names work well for parents who love classical stories, but it is worth reading the myth behind each one, since some figures have complicated or tragic tales.
