Unisex and Gender-Neutral Names

760 namesUnisex

Names shared by boys and girls are nothing new, but the pool has grown as more parents look for names that feel open and flexible. Many unisex names began as English or Irish surnames, including Avery, Parker, Hayden, Sawyer, Riley, Quinn and Emerson. Surnames tend to move easily between genders because they carry no built-in marker of being masculine or feminine, and occupational names like Parker and Sawyer come with a grounded, practical feel.

Nature and place names form another large group. River draws directly on the landscape, Rowan is the name of a tree with bright red berries, and Dakota comes from the name of a Native American people that was later given to places as well. Charlie shows a different path, a friendly nickname-style name that works just as well for a daughter as for a son, and Ariel has literary and biblical roots of its own.

Spelling tends to matter more with unisex names than with most. Peyton and Payton are both familiar, and some families feel one spelling leans a particular way, though there is no fixed rule. If you want a name that stays balanced, look for ones used steadily for both boys and girls, and say the full name aloud with your surname to hear how it lands.
