R is a rolling, resonant letter, and the sound changes across languages. In English it is soft, while in Spanish and Italian it is often tapped or rolled. If relatives will say the name in another language, it is worth hearing how it sounds in each.
Some of the oldest names here came to England with the Normans. Robert and Richard have Germanic roots and were carried by English kings, and they have stayed in use for centuries.
