Old English Girl Names

268 namesGirl

Old English was the language of the Anglo-Saxons, spoken in England before the Norman Conquest reshaped its vocabulary. Many girl names that trace back to it began life as descriptions of the land: a clearing, a meadow, a hill or a stream. Surnames formed from those place words, and over time parents turned the surnames into first names. That path explains why so many of these names sound crisp, outdoorsy and modern even though their roots are very old.

You will notice two common shapes here. One is the place name ending in a soft vowel sound, as in Hailey, Hadley and Kinsley, where the ending often comes from an Old English word for a clearing or meadow. The other is the nature word used directly, like Hazel, Brooke and Daisy, which carry an easy, storybook charm. Audrey stands a little apart, since it comes from an Anglo-Saxon personal name rather than a place.

Spelling is the main thing to think about with this group. Sounds like Hailey and Peyton have several accepted forms, and Peyton and Payton even sit side by side on this list. Pick the version you want to spell aloud for years, and say the full name with your surname a few times before you decide.
