Slavic Baby Names
85 names
Slavic names come from a large family of languages spoken across Eastern and Central Europe and the Balkans, including Russian, Polish, Czech, Serbian, Croatian and Bulgarian. Many traditional Slavic names were built from meaningful word parts. The element mil, meaning dear or gracious, appears in names like Mila, Milan and Milo, and gives them a warm, gentle sound that works well in English.
Other names on this page reached the Slavic world through Christianity and then took on local forms. Ivan is the Slavic version of a classic biblical name, and Luka is widely used across the Balkans. Girls' names such as Nadia, Mira, Danica and Alina show the soft vowel endings typical of feminine names in these languages, and Danica is linked to a word for the morning star.
Because the Slavic family is so broad, a name can be spelled differently in each country. You will see Danica and Danika, Rayna and Raina, and Alena beside Alina. Some languages also use accent marks that English drops. If you are honoring a specific heritage, find out how the name is written and pronounced in that language, and decide whether you want to keep the original spelling or adapt it.
