Swahili Baby Names

31 names

Swahili is spoken across East Africa, from Kenya and Tanzania to parts of Uganda, Mozambique and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, and it has long absorbed words from Arabic through centuries of trade along the coast. That history shows in its names. Jamila and Halima are Arabic in origin but have been at home on the Swahili coast for generations, alongside native words such as Zuri, meaning beautiful, and Jabari, meaning brave.

Many Swahili names became familiar in the United States through the celebration of Kwanzaa, whose seven principles are named in Swahili. Imani means faith and Nia means purpose, and both are used as first names for girls. Amani means peace, Jelani is usually translated as mighty, and Taraji means hope. Kamaria is often explained as like the moon, and Nala became widely known through a film that drew heavily on Swahili words.

Many of these names are short, end in a vowel and are pronounced exactly as they are spelled, which makes them easy to say in English. Several have close relatives in other spellings, such as Amani and Emani or Zuri and Zhuri. If you want a name with a clear meaning and a warm sound, this list offers both, and many of the names work for either a son or a daughter.
