Meaning and origin of Germain

Germain is a French and Latin name that is usually said to mean “brother, or German”.

Germain is the French form of the Latin Germanus. The Latin word meant having the same parents, and so brother, but the same form also meant German, so the name carries both possible senses. Saint Germain, a sixth-century bishop of Paris, gave his name to the Saint-Germain-des-Pres district, and Saint Germain of Auxerre was another widely venerated bishop. In French the name is said zhehr-MAN, while American speakers usually say jur-MAYN, close to Jermaine. Jermaine itself grew out of this name in American use. Germain feels continental and a little formal, with Germaine as the feminine form.

Other spellings with the same sound: Jermaine.
