Names That Start with P

198 names

P is a crisp, popping consonant, and names that start with it tend to sound lively. One quirk to know is the ph spelling, borrowed from Greek and pronounced like an f. Phoebe and Phoenix both use it, and Phoebe was the name of a Titan in Greek myth, while the phoenix is the mythical bird that rises from its own ashes.

The classic side of this letter is strongly Christian. Peter means rock and was the name of the leading apostle, Paul wrote many of the letters of the New Testament, and Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland. Penelope comes from the Odyssey, where she waits faithfully for her husband's return.

Most of the remaining names are English surnames or place names. Parker, Piper and Paige come from occupations: a park keeper, a pipe player and a young servant. Preston and Paxton began as place names, and Paisley is a Scottish town that also gave its name to a swirling fabric pattern. Peyton and Payton are two spellings of the same name, used for both boys and girls. Presley, also a surname, works for either. Short names like Paul and Paige pair well with long surnames.
