Why browse names at random
Lists sorted by popularity keep showing you the same names. A random draw breaks that pattern. Each click pulls one name from thousands of real names given to US babies, weighted so you see a mix of familiar and unusual picks, and shows its meaning where we have one.
It works well as a game with a partner. Take turns clicking, and each save a name that surprises you. After twenty minutes you will have a shortlist that neither of you would have found by scrolling a top 100.
Making the most of it
Use the buttons to choose girl, boy or unisex names. Save anything that catches your ear, even if you are not sure yet, because your shortlist is kept in this browser and you can share it with a link.
When a name sticks, open its profile to see where it comes from, how it is pronounced and how its popularity has changed since 1880.
Frequently asked questions
Are the random names real names?
Yes. Every name comes from US Social Security birth data, which lists names given to at least five babies in a year.
Can I get only unusual names?
The random generator mixes common and rare names. For rare names only, try the unique baby name generator.
Does it remember names I have already seen?
It avoids repeating names within a session, so you keep seeing new ones as you click.
