What counts as unique here
Every name here comes from US birth data, so it is a real name that real families have chosen. The generator starts with the Rare setting, which means names outside the top 5,000 in the latest year. Switch to Uncommon for names ranked roughly 1,000 to 5,000: distinctive, but not so rare that people will ask you to spell them every time.
Being rare is not the same as being made up. Many of these names are old names that have fallen out of use, names from other languages, or place and word names that are only now being tried.
Choosing a rare name well
A rare name will be spelled and pronounced wrong more often, so check that it sounds the way it looks. Say it to a friend and ask them to write it down. Look at the name's profile for its meaning and history, and make sure it has no meaning in another language that you would not want.
If you love a rare name but worry about everyday life, use it as a middle name or pair it with a familiar nickname.
Frequently asked questions
How rare are these names?
By default the generator shows names outside the top 5,000 in the latest US data. Some were given to only a handful of babies that year.
Are unique names a problem for children?
Most children do fine with an unusual name. The main practical cost is correcting spelling and pronunciation, so a name that is easy to read helps.
Can I still filter by meaning or origin?
Yes. Open More filters to choose an origin, a meaning or a style.
